Survivor Samoa, Episode 2, and Betsy the Police Officer

Day 3 Tribal council, Marisa was voted out of yellow (Foa Foa)and it was back to camp for the 9 remaining castaways.

Puppet Master Russell (1) was elated; his plan succeeded, boosting his confidence to a new level, which was evident by the devious smile that seemed to remain plastered on his face as he and the others slept. The next morning, he took Betsy the police officer aside questioning her move to vote against his wishes as she chose to write Ashley's name down at tribal council. She stood her ground and it was agreed they would have zero trust in one another. Naturally, this sent PM scurrying through camp shouting his next orders; Betsy would be the next to be sent home.

Mid-day, Betsy and Private Chief Mike, set out for tree-mail, which revealed clues for the upcoming immunity and reward challenge, while Ben the bar tender BBQ's lizard for lunch. Off on another side of camp, PM and Jaison, make an alliance. PM is convinced there is an individual immunity idol hidden in their camp. He is determined to be the first survivor ever to find the idol without a clue. Surprisingly, or not so suprisingly, he succeeds and to build trust with Jaison, he shows Jaison the idol.

With both tribes at game court, Jeff explains the challenge the reward would be fishing gear and immunity with a new twist that would be revealed to the leader of the winning tribe.

Six members from each tribe, three men and three women, would battle it out for a game of basketball survivor style. Three members in the pit battle for the balls, which would then have to be tossed to their teammates who were standing on the platform high above, who would then have to shoot the ball into the opposing tribe's hoop. First tribe to score 3 shots wins. On Jeff's call, the battle was on! Six players fighting for 3 loose balls looked more like a wrestling match than it did a basketball game. In a sudden move by Jeff, the game was stopped and all players were warned to keep it clean no dangerous play or obvious intent to hurt an opposing team member. "Consider yourself warned", he says, "You will be removed from the game."

Not a minute later, Ben the bar tender of yellow takes a cheap shot at Russell (2) the attorney and leader of purple, by purposely tripping him with a solid kick to the shin and for the first time in Survivor history, a player is kicked out of a challenge. Yellow is wasting no time setting themselves up as the team of villains and losers. While they set out to play dirty, purple (Galu) quietly stepped up and won immunity for the second time in a row.

With the immunity idol back in purple's hands, Jeff revealed the twist; Russell (2) had to choose a member of his tribe to go with yellow to their camp and remain with them through tribal council. He chose Yasmin the hair stylist. As she worked her way over to yellow with a note from Jeff in hand, purple headed back to their camp with the idol and fishing gear. Shambo the ex-marine was quick to step up sporting herself as "the one" to do the fishing. Back at camp, everyone was anticipating fish for dinner. Meanwhile, Shambo tires of fishing, and takes a leisure bath-break in the muddy swamp while a piece of equipment floats away. Heading back to camp empty-handed wins her a spot on the chopping block. "There were no fish in the swamp, she says, "but there is good news, there is a ton of fish out in the ocean." Judging from the look on the faces of the others in tribe, this statement deemed her the wise one of the tribe.

Once again, yellow must face Jeff at tribal council and they were forced to make their decisions and converse under the watchful eye of Yasmin. Fortunately for them, she made an unwise decision to open her mouth and tell them that she was there to help them become a better tribe. She flapped her jaws, putting them down non-stop. You never seen someone dig their own grave so fast! Another first in Survivor history. This move kept her at a disadvantage with no real information to take back to her tribe or maybe it was her strategy. We will find out next week. Incidentally, the note from Jeff was the first of a set of clues given to find the hidden individual immunity idol. After a confrontation with Ben the bar tender, she unwittingly put him at odds with his tribe because all through the night he was hacking on wood, keeping the others from an already difficult night's sleep.

Day 6 and the morning of tribal council, members plot and scheme. With Mike the private chief out of the game, due to medical issues that arose after the challenge, Betsy knew she was in danger. She did her best to get the girls to team up with her and vote out Ben for being a disturbance the night before and for being the one to blow their chances of winning the challenge after being kicked out of the game.

Her efforts were in vain, as the puppet master had his way. It is obvious he is the one calling the shots. What I want to know is where was Doctor Mick the supposed leader of this tribe while all of this was going on? Is he next to go? He already lost my vote to be the one who will walk away with the million-dollar check. It could be the puppet master unless Jaison the law student catches on to his game and can convince the others to blindside him, which the previews for next week's episode lead us to believe.

33 days and 18 people left; who will be voted off next?

Wow, Sis! I must admit that, before I read your article I was NOT a "Survivor" fan-I'm still not.

Fun article, though. I love your writing!

hahaha! Thanks for the laugh. So glad you can appreciate the write while not being a fan of the subject :-) thanks for the compliment. Tree mail is a box that is hooked to a tree away from the main camp. The morning of each challenge day there is a mail in the box. The note comes in riddle form so that the tribe has some time to figure out what the challenge is going to be so they can put together a tentative game plan. Have a wonderful weekend! Sis

I'm definitely not a big Survivor fan, but I certainly did enjoy your writing style. It's descriptive, informative and it almost feels like I watched the actual episode. I doubt the faces that I have in my head match the actual players, but I still love it nonetheless.

Hi Tereza,

I am sorry to say, I have no idea what this is about, but looks like some suspense to me about somebody winning money? Is this a television series you are talking about? :-) I wish I knew more about it. But it's very interesting.

Hello friend. Yes, it is a television show were contestants live on a island and have to "live off the land" to survive while they forge alliances with other members because after each challenge, the losing tribe must go to what is called tribal coucil and they have to vote one of their members out. There are a lot of twists and turns and the challenges are physically and mentally demanding. In the end the last three remaining people are in the hands of the jury who is made up of the previous 7 people voted out. Each of these three have to plead their case before the jury as to why they believe they deserve to win the million dollars. Then the jury gets to ask questions of them and then they jury decides who wins. The trick is to play the game smart enough that you do not make to many enemies because in the end you want the jurers to like you. It's a game people love or hate. No inbetween . Thanks for reading and commenting. I hope this explanation helps you understand a little bit better. Blessings to you! Teresa

Thank you for the recap, Teresa. I have to admit I guffawed a little at the idea of yellow bartender tripping the guy with a solid kick to the chin, rather than the shin. I have wondered for years when they were going to crack down on the unnecessary roughness of survivor challenges! As usual, the roughness sent a player to the hospital anyway.

Hi Jay, you are a gem :-) thanks for pointing out chin instead of shin. I fixed it. Figures I would proof read a gazillion times and still miss that. I was glad the game was stopped. It is unfortunate and sad that Mike had some issues. I suppose we never really know how our bodies will react when we are out of normal routines. Thankfully the show takes precautions and has medics available at a momments notice just like every other sporting event out there. Thanks for reading and the comment. Blessings to you! Teresa

I've never really been a fan of the survivor game. I don't see the point. Maybe I'm just a killjoy. Plus, I'd probably be one of the first people to get voted off if I was playing the game, because I just don't get it. Interesting article.

Hi Jim, thanks for reading. I don't think I would succeed as a player because I am not that strong physically and I don't like sleeping with bugs or eating fish. Although I would think it would challenge me to see just how much I am willing to do to win a million bucks. That alone scares me :-)

Survivor? Never be a fan. I just can't stomach most of TV, especially "reality TV." But I'll always be a Teresa fan ;=0 (Wow, where's my kickback for kissing up? ;=) Peace!

Hi Jeff, thanks for stopping by - your check is in the mail. :-) I am not much for TV either, but I can't help but enjoy Survivor and the Amazing Race. OH and I can't leave out Forensic Files. Other than that, I can do without. Truly I can do without these shows to, but I don't want to :-)

Teresa,

Another great review but like Ken -- I'm still not a fan.  Interesting note on the comments below.  No one here at SW seems to watch it either.   I'll take a rerun of Law and Order any day!  I'm kidding (but I'm not).

Good write.

I'll check out #3 now but I realize I really need to keep a list of characters to rememberr who is who.

Thanks Nancy, I see that. But I committed to writing this to challenge myself and my skills. If I quit now, I will fail myself and I can't do that :-) and I sure do appreciate my fans sticking with me and at least commenting on my writing ability even though they are not interested in the content :-)

I am getting a decent amount of search engine hits, so somebody out there likes Survivor!!! :-). Hugs, T
